Brainsport Times Apr. 5, 2017
For those of you who have frequented Brainsport over the past several years there's a good chance you ran into Trevor Hofbauer at some point. Trevor is our former New Balance rep turned elite long distance runner; and at 6'3 he's tough to miss in passing.
The 24-year-old is a no-nonsense runner who isn't afraid to publicly voice his goals: to compete in the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. If his performances over the past couple of years are any indication, he's well on his way. He's a national bronze medalist in the half marathon and cross country, with personal bests of 1:04:28 half marathon, 29:28 10K and 14:33 5K. In 2016 he represented Canada at the World's Best 10K in Puerto Rico, and just last week was the first Canadian to cross the finish line at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda.
Trevor's commitment to pursuing his dreams was made evident earlier this year when he packed his bags in Calgary, left his job with New Balance, and moved out to Guelph to run full time with the Speed River Track and Field Club.
In this week's Q&A we're delighted to be speaking with Trevor about his journey thus far, and what lies ahead. So, let's get to it!
Q&A with Trevor Hofbauer
Tara: It was always such a pleasure to have you come into the store when you were our New Balance rep. What drove the decision to leave your position with New Balance and make the move out East?
Trevor: Leaving the New Balance job was tough. I always really enjoyed visiting Saskatoon solely because of Brainsport and New Balance Saskatoon, and I would have never visited Saskatoon if it wasn't for that job and the stores. In the moment, I made the decision to maximize my opportunity to represent Canada at the Olympics, everything else is secondary, including employment.
Tara: The move seems to be working for you. The first Canadian to cross the finish line at the the World Cross Country Championship is no small feat. What was your preparation like going into that event, and what do you think made it such a success?
Trevor: Preparation was pretty simple. Like any race, we put in the work (workouts, quality miles, stretching, etc.) and continued to believe in our abilities to be better everyday. I think there's only so much you can do physically and the rest is all mental, that's what made it a successful race.

Tara: What have been some the more significant adjustments to your training since joining Speed River?
Trevor: I'd say the biggest adjustments have been the increase of overall mileage and total time spent in workouts (running intervals, length of tempo's, etc.). My nutrition has also changed drastically. With New Balance, the road trips and hotel accommodations forced me to eat out quite a bit. Now, I cook all of my meals and focus on intaking essential nutrients. The change to nutrition has helped my quality of sleep and recovery.
Tara: How do you think your time as a New Balance rep impacts your training today? You certainly know a lot about the product you're sporting as you continue to be sponsored by the company.
Trevor: I think my time as a New Balance rep will have its greatest impact when I'm representing the company at race events, grassroots events, in articles, and at any voluntary event. The product continues to get better everyday, so I'm very thankful for their continued support.
Tara: It may seem like you moved quite quickly onto the scene as one of Canada's top distance runners, but there was a lot of time and effort put in before you starting breaking through. Can you describe for us what it took to reach the level you're now competing at?
Trevor: A lot of focus. Over the years, I've had high expectations for myself and continued to have an open mind with training. Having an open mind has allowed me to adapt to work schedules, training variables, personal downfalls, and has allowed me to stay relatively relaxed when times have been stressful. The biggest contributor to success is training your mind before training your body and only once you train your mind will you be able to find success physically.
Tara: Any plans to race out West this year?
Trevor: Yup, a couple races out West. First one will be the Sun Run in Vancouver on April 23, the second is Calgary Half Marathon on May 28.
