Brainsport Times Nov. 22, 2017

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Gingerbread Run over the weekend! It was another successful year raising funds for the Saskatchewan Abilities Council - and a lot of fun chasing down Gingy!

We look forward to seeing all of you out for the Brainsport Brainfreeze in March. On that note, we're proud to be offering Brainsport Running Academy courses to get you prepared for the Brainfreeze, or any other running goals you may have leading into 2018.

In this week's Q&A we're speaking with Tarrant Cross Child, who's coaching the 10k course, starting on Nov. 27. Tarrant also recently returned from a great performance at the New York City Marathon, so we'll get his take on that experience as well.

Q&A with Tarrant Cross Child

Tara: This is a 14-week course, which allows for plenty of time to train for a 10k race, whether a beginner or more advanced runner. Can you speak to how this course will help runners of various levels reach their goals?

Tarrant: This is a course that would suit multiple levels: First 10k - yes, only ran a 5k - yes, very little walk/run - absolutely yes. For the seasoned 10k participants we can help you also. It’s very goal oriented, so each individual will tell me their goals and we’d make a plan that fits. They set the goals - I guide them to achieve their goals.

Tara: What are some examples of the technical/form aspects of running you'll be working on with participants?

Tarrant: We will work on dynamic warmups that not only help with form but also strengthen each runner. We’ve had so many people in past clinics achieving personal bests and lots of it can be attributed to the technical/form focus.

Tara: Will you be discussing the mental side of training and racing with participants?

Tarrant: As all runners know, our minds can play tricks on us. We have great guest speakers lined up to cover a lot of this. However, in our training we will not only get fitter but our minds will be getting a workout too.

Tara: You train with a group of competitive runners, so you know the advantages of training with others. Can you talk about some of the benefits participants will get from joining in this group for a 14-week course?

Tarrant: Yes, training with Team Warick is a great learning experience. Not only learning from a national-class coach but also learning from top quality athletes. I will definitely bring that knowledge into my Brainsport Run Academy courses. Training in a group setting not only keeps you accountable but also pushes you to better yourself.

Tara: Before we let you go, it would great to hear about your New York City Marathon experience. You and Brian traveled together, and experienced this world-renowned event for the first time. There's so much you could tell us about your time in New York, but to narrow it down, what did the experience teach you as a runner, and coach?

Tarrant: Brian and I had such a great time. A trip to remember that’s for sure. I learned a lot from Brian and the entire experience. It taught me to prepare and respect the distance, but nothing prepared me for the excitement along the course and pretty much everywhere we went.
